Mission

The ICAH, based in Gibraltar, is a cultural-scientific institution that has set itself the goal of researching the history of the Atlantic. This history ranges from the ancient history of the Atlantic (Phoenician, Greek and Roman history) to the Germanic migrations, the African-Arab immigration and the Reconquista in the Middle Ages, the Iberian conquests (Spanish and Portuguese) of the Atlantic in West Africa and the Americas in the early modern period as well as the British and Dutch access to the Iberian Atlantic to the history of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries with its mass migration. It also covers the history of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries with its mass migration to the Americas, the two world wars, the Spanish Civil War, the Cold War as well as the field of post-colonialism which continues to the present day.

As the southernmost Atlantic port, the choice of Gibraltar as the seat of the newly founded centre seems ideal to us. In addition, Gibraltar is located at the intersection with the Mediterranean and Atlantic-Mediterranean Africa, which means that the impact of the Atlantic on these regions is profound and can be perfectly explored.

To achieve these goals, the ICAH will endevour to bring together in Gibraltar the currently best historians of Atlantic history. Our team of high calibre scholars will accompany delegates in our seminars, and in our applied history excursions in the Atlantic region to present the latest research findings exclusively to our participants at our international conferences in Gibraltar. Gibraltar’s strategic location allows us to explore the Atlantic’s influence on Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Our team of historians presents exclusive research at seminars and excursions for delegates.

Approach

By bringing together leading scholars, ICAH provides a platform for high-quality research and collaboration in Atlantic history. We focus on applied history excursions, seminars, and international conferences held in Gibraltar.

Our approach ensures that delegates gain insights from both historical and contemporary perspectives, connecting the Atlantic past with present research.
